Major Adams Community Committee

The Major Adams Community Committee was founded in 1997 by James “Major” Adams, Youth Service Community of the Westside, Horner Association of Men (HAM) and Henry Horner Alumni Association.  The MACC prides itself on providing indigenous leadership to the residents of the Henry Horner/Westhaven community.  In 1996 Boys and girls Clubs of Chicago decided to end its partnership with the CHA’s Henry Horner Homes and announced the closing of the Horner Club.  As a result of the concerned efforts of the Horner residents, Local Advisory Council, Henry Horner Alumni, YSCW, and the Horner Association of Men (HAM), the Horner Club reopened in 1997 as the Major Adams Community Committee (MACC), named after the community’s own living legend James “Major” Adams.

The MACC quickly reestablished the programming excellence the community has come to expect.  While the basic programming remained, the MACC strived to provide the grassroots support that could not be provided by the old Horner Club.  The MACC became intimately involved in the Near West Side redevelopment process through the parent councils.  Men’s programming was quickly established to

Ensure that men could reenter the community through positive means.  Adult based programming was expanded to foster volunteerism and community activism.  Youth activities were increased to reflect the cultural diversity of the community.  The Juvenile Delinquency programs were redesigned to mentor hard to reach youth.  Most notably, neighborhood leadership was transferred back to the community residents.  The mission of the MACC “Empowerment of Youth and Families” embodied the organization’s purpose.
